Rats

– Look for large droppings near runways.

– Hear night time scurries in crawl spaces.

Snap traps and tamper-resistant bait stations along runways and burrow entrances; exterior burrow fumigation or tracking powder for burrow populations; exclusion after reduction. Traps and bait boxes go where rats travel. Outdoor burrows get treated to clear the nest. Bait boxes are sealed to keep pets safe. Once numbers drop, gaps are sealed to lock them out.

We use snap traps and tamper boxes on runways. Then we seal entry points and burrows.

– Seal foundation gaps, crawlspace vents, and drain openings with heavy-gauge wire mesh.

– Keep dumpsters and outdoor bins sealed and elevated where possible.

– Eliminate yard debris, dense ground cover, and compost piles near the structure.

– Fix leaking pipes and exterior water sources that attract rats.

– Use tamper-resistant bait stations rather than open bait — protects pets and wildlife.

– Keep trash bins closed and off the ground.

– Remove dense ground cover near foundations.

– Use heavy mesh on crawl vents and drains.

Burrows underground near foundations, dumpsters, and along waterways; also nests in crawlspaces and lower wall voids; stays closer to ground level than roof rats; requires gap of approximately 19mm for entry. Norway rats dig burrows near foundations and trash. They like spots close to the ground. Crawlspaces and low wall gaps make good nests. They need only a small hole to get inside.

Rats are common near Portland piers, dumpsters, and old foundations. Waterfront areas draw them year round.
