Fleas

Ctenocephalides felis

How to Identify

– Check pet fur for tiny, dark specks.
– Look for itchy red bites on legs and ankles.
– Sweep bedding for flea dirt and eggs.

Health Risks

Bites cause intense pruritic (itchy) dermatitis; cat flea is the intermediate host for the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum; can transmit murine typhus and serve as vector for Bartonella spp. in sensitized individuals. Flea bites are very itchy for people and pets. Pets can scratch so much that their skin gets sore. Fleas can also pass a tapeworm to a pet. Heavy bites can leave red bumps all over the ankles.

Fleas bite people and pets and cause itchy rashes. They can spread tapeworm to pets.

Our Treatment Method

Simultaneous pet treatment (veterinarian-prescribed product) and indoor IGR + adulticide spray to all floor surfaces; yard treatment of pet-resting areas; vacuuming to stimulate pupal emergence. You must treat the pet and the home at the same time. If you skip one, the fleas just come right back. A pro treats floors and the spots pets rest outside. Vacuuming often helps pull the hidden young fleas out.

Treat pets first with vet products. Then we spray the home and yard and add IGRs.

Prevention Tips

– Keep pets on year-round veterinarian-prescribed flea prevention.

– Vacuum carpets, furniture, and baseboards weekly during infestation and dispose of bags promptly.

– Wash pet bedding in hot water (60°C+) weekly.

– Treat outdoor areas where pets rest — under decks, along fences — with yard spray.

– Limit wildlife (feral cats, opossums, raccoons) access to yard to reduce flea introduction.

– Keep pets on year-round flea medicine.

– Wash pet bedding often in hot water.

– Treat shady yard spots where pets rest.

Habitat & Behavior

Pet bedding, carpeting, upholstered furniture, and yard areas frequented by pets or wildlife; larvae develop in organic debris at the base of carpet fibers and in soil. Fleas ride in on pets and wildlife. They drop eggs into carpets, bedding, and soft furniture. The young fleas grow down in the carpet fibers. Shady yard spots where pets rest are breeding grounds too.

Local Prevalence

Fleas come with pets and wildlife in Portland yards. Warm months bring more bites.
